During the week of August 6th through August 10th, the Brewerton United Methodist Church will be transformed into “SONTreasure Island” where children from the community and our Childcare Program will be invited to travel to the Hawaiian islands of Oahu, Maui, the BIG Island of Hilo & Kona, and Kaui, featuring glittering turquoise waters, sandy beaches, and warm ocean breezes, sea life, volcanoes, rainforests and more. As they explore the SONTreasure Islands, they’ll search for a treasure that is more precious than gold, more lasting than diamonds…the greatest treasure of all— God’s LOVE. They’ll learn that God's love is: Giving, Kind, Caring, Forgiving and FOREVER. A skit each morning will help bring the theme to life as the kids explore SONTreasure Island through HU-LA-LA music, ALOHA crafts, TROPICAL Bible Stories, SUN-Sational Snacks and Island Games. The program will run for five days, Monday through Friday, from 9:30 a.m. to Noon each day.
Each day we will begin with an opening assembly featuring music and a skit and end with a closing assembly featuring music, dancing, and exciting adventures found on SONTreasure Island. The children will be divided into the following groups based on their age/grade in the Fall: Preschool– Ages 3 & 4, Kindergarten – Age 5 and Grades 1 – 6 (Ages 6 – 12.)
Following the morning Assembly, the groups will rotate through four (4) different Activity Centers: Bible story center, Game/snack center, Crafts center, and the Music center, where they will explore the day’s lesson in greater detail with age-appropriate activities, lead by an Activity Leader for each of the centers. Our time together will end with a closing assembly with all groups coming together in the Sanctuary for music, dancing and much more!

VBS Mission Project: In the spirit of giving and sharing our love with others, we’re encouraging our VBS children to help us provide the supplies necessary to create School Kits for UMCOR, United Methodist Committee on Relief. Many children in the US and around the world do not have access to everyday items needed for school. Through this program, children will be given the supplies they need to learn and grow. Through OUR donations WE can help make a difference in the lives of MANY other young children. We will be collecting the following items each day throughout the week:
(1) SCISSORS- round tip, blunt
(2) CRAYONS- 24 count
(3) PAPER- filler paper, college or wide rule (100-200 count) and/or 1-subject spiral notebooks
(4) RULERS- wood, metal, or plastic- 12 inches
PENCILS/PENCIL SHARPENERS- #2 pencils, sharpeners 1 inch or longer
ERASERS- 2 inches or longer
As you begin your back to school shopping, we hope you will consider picking up extra supplies to share with students in need. We will be putting the School Kits together in a “Mission Project Moment” during our special VBS celebration on Sunday, August 12th, where we will share all that we learned with our congregation, family, friends, and our community. Thank you for your support!
During our final day of VBS, Friday, August 10th, the children will be treated to a recap of the week’s adventures; as they put the final touches on the VBS Banner, their craft projects, and the mission project. They will also be creating their own group’s collage of photos taken throughout the week to showcase for all to see. In addition, each group will work on their part of the special production that will be held on Sunday, August 12th. During our final assembly, the children and their leaders will entertain each other in a “dress rehearsal” of the showcase performance. Our Cast of Characters and music leaders will be on hand to make it memorial experience for everyone… one we will want to share with our families & friends, for sure!
NEW, this year… we are excited to SHARE our VBS experience with our BUMC congregation, childcare families and friends and the community families and friends as we invite all the children and staff to return to SONTreasure Island on Sunday, August 12th during our 10:15 a.m. worship; where we will be featuring a special celebration starring the children as they share all they learned throughout our week together, through music, crafts, Bible stories and more! Our own “Cast of Characters” will help lead the children as they perform and share. A special Mission Project work session will be held to assemble all the School Kits using the donations collected during the week. Lastly, we will celebrate at a Hawaiian Luau in the church yard for ALL to see! We look forward to sharing God’s love with others!
